Obituary of Hildara Humbertina Blakesley

Please share a memory of Hildara to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Hildara H. Blakesley Jabo of Montero, Peru S.A. passed away on January 15th. She ended her battle with cancer gracefully with her daughters by her side in Lapeer, MI.

Hildara was born on April 20th 1949 in Montero, a beautiful mountain town in northern Peru, South America. She was a free and independent spirit, with a wanderlust for travel, and a gift for hospitality. Her adventurous spirit would take her far from home when she met and fell in love with a Peace Corps volunteer from Aitkin, Minnesota. She arrived in the US in 1974, departing during Peru’s summer season and arriving in northern Minnesota during a record snow season. Although she never learned to love winter, she was always adapting, and embraced her new midwestern life. Minnesota became her home and jumping off point for so many adventures. She found joy in gardening, family camping trips, and could be content for hours in a row boat bobber fishing for pan fish.

Hildara was fiercely dedicated to her family both in Minnesota and Peru. She had a strong sense of community and a gift for mentoring young people. It was not surprising that she found fullfillment in helping families, which included providing home daycare in the St. Cloud area for many years, leading to becoming a Legal Assistant for the St. Cloud Area Legal Services. She gained her citizenship in 1980. With her boundless determination, and the help of a brave neighbor, she earnded her license to drive, and from there continued to blaze her own trail. She proudly completed her education in 1994, and fulfilled a dream of bringing her mother to the United States. In 2012 after 38 years of adventures and Minnesota winters, she decided to return home to Peru. There she continued to share her hospitality and generosity hosting mission groups, family, friends, and foreign travelers at her home in Montero. With the help of family, one of her greatest pleasures was organizing events for the local children. She rekindled a relationship with a childhood friend and cherished their companionship. Together they continued to adventure and live life to the fullest.

Hildara was bigger then life with a smile and laugh to match. She had a magnetic personality and was a loyal friend with a knack for not "sugar coating". She offered inspiration to her neices and nephews. She instilled strength and kindness into her daughters. She is irreplaceable and will be forever missed.

She is survived by her good friend and former husband Douglas Blakesley of Red Wing, MN; daughters Milagros (Erick) Wicklund of Lapeer, MI, and Virginia (Pete) Loso of Salt Lake City, UT; and brothers and sisters of the Jabo Ortega family, Jose, Ruby, Calo, Lucho, Carmen, Ancel, and Marieta. She was preceded by her parents, brother Leo, and sister Lica.

Hildara was forever grateful for the support and care she received during her battle with cancer. In her honor memorial donations may be made to: Huntsman Cancer Institute of Utah https://give.huntsmancancer.org/page/33497/donate/1

Condolences for the family may be sent to Milagros Wicklund, 2180 Green Acres Drive, Lapeer, MI 48446. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Residential Home Hospice, Lapeer, MI.
