Obituary of Walter Leonard Hemingway
Hemingway, Walter L. of Otter Lake left for his Ultimate Vacation to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on February 10, 2022. He was 68 years old. Walter’s short and heroic battle with cancer ended with his brother, Yale, by his side. Praise God! It was a short illness; he doesn’t hurt anymore.
Walter was best known for his sweet, bubbling laughter and cheery cheeks with dimples when he grinned from ear to ear. Many in the Village know him from his 1.5-mile route he took daily through the Village. Walter lived in Otter Lake his entire life. As a child, Walter would take the route to visit family and get the mail. Later in life, every morning he walked the route, stopping at the local bar for a cup of coffee with the guys to visit and share the news around town. (A guy’s version of a lady’s beauty parlor.) Even wheelchair bound, Walter would use his feet to walk around town on his normal route. Nothing held him back when he made up his mind and when it came to his routine; nothing, except no ramp and the weather.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Max and Phyllis Hemingway, his brother, Max Jr., and sister, Janis Carrabia. He is survived by his sister, Doris Blackmer, his brother, Yale Hemingway, brother-in-law James (Janis) Carrabia, nephews Anthony and Eric Carrabia, nephew Josh Hemingway, and niece, Naomi Hemingway. Memorial services are to be determined.
The family would like to thank the Compassus Hospice team that cared for Walter, for their invaluable and generous support through this experience; God bless you!
