Obituary of Guy Frederick Patton

Guy Frederick Patton Jr., age 96, passed away on Monday morning, March 7, 2022 at Stonegate Medical Facility in Lapeer, Michigan.

Guy was born on June 27, 1925 in Lakeland, Florida, where he lived with his mother, father and older sister, Pat, until he was 7. His family then moved to Windsor, Ontario where his father ran a chicken farm in the midst of the Great Depression. His mother, Viva, was a school teacher. After he graduated from high school, he drove to California with his best friend, Richard Morgan. There they both joined the U.S. Military Service. Guy served for 3 ½ years in the U.S. Navy, receiving him the honor of the WW2 Victory Medal. After his time in the service he worked for Philco Corporation repairing TV’s and radios. He then went to a Windsor area university which later led to his employment as a Department Head for the Electronics and Instrumentation Department at the Tech Center at General Motors in Warren, MI. He retired in 1986.

Guy met Helen Morgan because he was best friends with her brothers, Richard and Harry. She was the “annoying little sister” when they were growing up. When he returned from the Navy he asked Helen out on a date and the rest was history. Guy built his first home with his own two hands alongside his father, in Windsor, ON and married the love of his life on April 30, 1949. In 1956, they adopted their son, Richard at age 1 and when Richard was 8, they had a home built in Utica, MI now Shelby Twp. MI.

Everyone who knew Guy, knew that he believed that you never stop learning. He was an avid reader and enjoyed spending time with his family. He loved to tell stories of his childhood and he often mentioned his kind neighbors on Galaxy Drive and how they would brighten his days. He had many hobbies from building radios and obtaining his HAMM radio license, learning Morse code, woodworking, cars, photography and especially aviation. He began his love of flight by building and flying model airplanes growing up. Guy received his pilot’s license in 1976. He owned planes, but also built planes in his basement. He loved to fly with his family. He was able to take one final flight, thanks to Stonegate, this past year.

He is survived by his son: Richard Guy Patton (Sharon), His grandchildren: Beth Ann Emmons (Shane), Michael Guy Patton, and Jonathan Lawrence Patton, His great-grandchildren: Violet Ann Emmons, Ada Love Emmons, Matthew Guy Patton, Eliana Grace Patton, and Selah Wren Patton.
