John Hodgson

Obituary of John Wahl Hodgson

John Wahl Hodgson Sr. passed away comfortably at home on New Year’s Eve 2022, at 9:27 am.  John lived a very full and active life; he golfed up until his very last year.  His presence will be greatly missed by his family, friends, church, and community. John was born September 8, 1932, to the late William Hodgson and Bertha Wahl. He married the love of his life Patricia L. Young by eloping in Angola, Indiana on April 5, 1952. John and Pat were married 70 years and she preceded him in death on July 11, 2022. They have 5 children; John Hodgson Jr. (Rose), Saginaw, MI; Terry Stupnicki (Dale deceased); Sand Lake, MI; Sue Lang (Tim); Defiance, OH; Sandra Pothoof, Saginaw, MI; Michael Hodgson (Deanna); Gladwin, MI. He has 14 grandchildren; Jason Stupnicki, Jennifer Atkinson, Patricia (Jeff) Mehring, Dale (Penny) Stupnicki, Roger Willbanks, Alesha (Ben) Switzer, Matthew (Elizabeth) Hodgson, Sarah (Eric) VanEenenaam, Janel (Andrew) Taylor, Josh (Laura) Traxler, Shaun Traxler, Joseph Kohnke, Justen (Brianna) Traxler, Noel (Heather) Kohnke. He has 24 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren. John created many wonderful memories for his family by working 42 years at Saginaw Steering Gear retiring in 1992 as a pyrometer tech. John was always quick with a smile and created many lasting memories with anyone he encountered.  He enjoyed deer camp with his sons, other family members and friends. For many years he and Pat loved traveling in their motor home to Florida and Northern Michigan. Above all else, he loved spending time with Pat and their family. Being together with everyone that he cared about was the most important thing to him. John loved socializing and helping others. For many years he volunteered at the Bridgeport Knights of Columbus serving as Grand Knight, building manager, calling bingo and golfing on the Knights of Columbus league. A highlight for John and his son Mike was winning the league championship one year.  He also enjoyed raising a glass and playing pool with friends and family. He always had a way of making people happy, and filling people's hearts with joy. John was an active member of the Catholic Church and helped with the start-up of the first Catholic Federal Credit Union Branch (now Jolt) in Buena Vista. He was quick to help a stranger in need.  John will be deeply missed, for his service and influence on so many people. John W. Hodgson Sr. will live on in all our hearts, and we can all celebrate the fact that Heaven has gained such an incredible man. May he rest in peace knowing he was able to celebrate another New Year with his Patty.
