Mary Stella VanKirk Loftus passed away in the early morning of Friday, April 20th, 2018 at the age of 94 (just a month shy of her 95th Birthday). Mary was born on May 26th, 1923 in Detroit, Michigan to Raymond VanKirk and Carrie Strubank. In November 1945, she married her late husband, John Thomas Loftus after he was honorably discharged from the United States Navy. During the war, Mary assisted the effort by working in a Detroit factory. Later, her love of fashion lead her to a part-time career in retail at the department store, Albert’s.
In March of 1947, Mary and John had their first and only child, John Thomas Loftus III. She always talked about how lucky she was to have John and Johnny and they were all she needed. She was also blessed with a full family that included an older sister, brothers, and many nieces and nephews whom she adored. Linda Costa being one of them that was more like a daughter than a niece. In May of 1990, Mary and John’s only granddaughter, Jamie Marie, was born to John and Connie. Mary was the best Grandma Jamie could have hoped for. They spent so much time together playing games, baking, and laughing.
Mary enjoyed Euchre and other card games, word searches, reading the paper, baking, collecting owls and angels, watching television, her favorite show was “Days of Our Lives,” and most of all, spending time with her family and friends.
Mary was loved by so many and will be greatly missed by all.
Interment will be held at St. Hedwig Cemetery in Dearborn Heights, Michigan on Friday, June 1st, 2018 at 2:30pm. A celebration of life for family and friends will follow at 4pm in Livonia. Please contact Jamie for directions.
