Obituary of Paul Shurtz

Paul Eugene Shurtz, age 79 of Punta Gorda, Florida died peacefully on September 9, 2018 at

the Pines Memory Care Unit in Lapeer, Michigan, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s

Disease.

Paul was born May 29, 1939 in Reed City Michigan to the late Vernon and Pauline Shurtz. He

was the oldest of four children. Paul served his country Honorably in the United States Navy as

a SeaBee. Skills learned in the Navy presented Paul with a very long and successful career as

a Mason. Paul married Joan Carpenter on February 13, 1965 in Pontiac Michigan having two

daughters. They raised their family in Clarkston Michigan. Upon retirement in 2005, Paul and

Joan took to the open roads in a Motorhome with a retirement theme of “R-TYME”. They

traveled around the United States before eventually settling in Punta Gorda, Florida. Here they

made a new home and made many new friends that they now call “family”. Included in this

extended family are their very close friends and neighbors Ken, Norma and Friday Howdyshell.

Paul was an avid outdoorsman and especially loved to fish. He enjoyed all types of fishing but

found fly-in fishing trips to Canada to be his favorite. All that have known Paul, knew that he

loved adventure and that he was always ready for the next activity or trip. He particularly

enjoyed casinos, motorcycles, fast cars, watching Nascar and competitive sporting events. Paul

had a never ending smile and a laid back personality that will be greatly missed. His greatest joy

in life was spending time with his family. He was an amazing husband, father and grandfather.

He has left his daughters and grandchildren with a wealth of knowledge and a love for life.

Paul is survived by his loving wife, Joan Shurtz of Punta Gorda, Florida; Children, Paula

(Matthew) Doan of Paw Paw, Michigan and Stacey (Darrin) Lamphier of Lapeer, Michigan; 6

grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; Siblings, Pat Shurtz, Sharon Sheldon, Mary Saltzman; and

many extended family members including cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews and an aunt. He

was preceded in death by his parents.

Paul chose to be a part of the Science Care Whole Body Donation program in hopes his

donation may help in the development of a cure for Alzheimer’s Disease. Cremation has taken
