Obituary of Joan Marie Shurtz

Joan Marie Shurtz age 72, of Punta Gorda, Florida died peacefully on December 18, 2018 at
the Fields of Grand Blanc Assisted Living Home in Grand Blanc, Michigan after a courageous
battle with lung cancer.

Joan was born March 29, 1946 in Pontiac, Michigan to the late Jim and Loretta Carpenter. She
was the oldest of 5 children. After high school Joan met the love of her life Paul Shurtz and they
were married on February 13, 1965 in Pontiac, Michigan. They then had two daughters Paula
and Stacey. Joan loved being a mother but knew she had more to offer. So with one daughter
still in diapers, Joan went to college and graduated with a RN degree. She then went on to
have a long and successful career in nursing, where she touched many lives. Upon her
retirement from St Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac in 2005, she and Paul took to the open
roads in a motorhome, with a retirement motto of "R-Tyme". They traveled around the United
States before finally settling in Punta Gorda, Florida, at a retirement park, which they frequently
called their "Fountain of Youth". Here they made a new home and made many new life long
friends. Joan was highly involved in the park, taking on the role of the activity coordinator with
her dear friend Norma Howdyshell.

All that have known Joan, knew she loved everything about life and she did not know a
stranger. Her greatest joy was her family and especially her grandchildren Joshua, Tiffany,
Jacob and Amber. Joan also loved to spend her free time with Paul, walking along the ocean
looking for seashells. Her love for life was contagious and she and her inviting smile will be
sadly missed.

Joan is survived by her children Paula(Matthew) Doan of Paw Paw, MI and Stacey(Darrin)
Lamphier of Lapeer, MI, siblings Gary, Clyde, Glen and Joyce, grandchildren plus many
extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved
husband Paul(9/9/18).

Joan chose to be a part of the Science Care Whole Body Donation Program, in hopes that her
donation may help to find a cure for cancer. Cremation has taken place and a memorial will be
held at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, MI at a later date. Memorial contributions in
memory of Joan may be made to the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer.
